Ann and Jerry moved back to Madison to be closer to the grandkids. They found the perfect house in an established neighborhood featuring a large private yard full of mature trees. As part of an extensive renovation, they asked us to create a beautiful outdoor living space they could enjoy with family and friends. We opened the living space and added a large 10-foot wide four-panel patio door leading out to the new deck. As part of the design, the clients requested that we refurbish a generous screened porch.

Creating a Beautiful Transitional Screened Porch

The homeowners wanted to extend their living space outdoors. As part of the process of creating an open floor plan, we included a four-panel patio door leading to the deck. The screened porch was dilapidated, needing new screens and the wood interior needed maintenance. We also eliminated a window from the kitchen to the screened porch, in order to create a better kitchen floor plan. By painting the wood and replacing the screens, this screened porch got a new look and a new life. The screened porch features a beautiful Minke Aire fan and a door that connects it to the kitchen and Great room. It's the perfect space to relax with a coffee in the morning or gather with friends and family!

A New Two-Level Deck for Grilling and Al Fresco Dining

The Andersen Frenchwood four-panel gliding patio door leads from the great room and transitions to the two-level exterior living space. The lower level of the new deck is the perfect space for grilling and al fresco dining. Outside the patio door is an intimate gathering space and conversation area complete with a gas fire pit. The large private yard with mature plantings makes this outdoor space a comfortable, relaxing space, and the large yard is the perfect spot for the grandkids.

The true game-changer of this patio door and deck is in the feel that is created, both indoors and outdoors. The home was formerly disconnected from the back yard, with only a window looking out. One had to traverse through the screened porch and down a steep step into the yard, a circuitous route that was not particularly comfortable or safe due to the tall steps. The new patio door and comfortable steps now provide the perfect choice of two routes out to the back yard, and the ability to get to the deck from either the house or the screened porch.

Our Clients Are Delighted With This Outdoor Living Space

The new open floor plan and outdoor living space give Ann and Jerry the perfect place to host family and friends. The new two-level deck and screened porch extend the living space outdoors, giving Ann and Jerry a variety of areas to entertain, enjoy outdoor dining, or sit around the gas firepit with the grandkids making smores. Delighted clients with a home that now has all of the amenities of modern living plus a comfortable outdoor space to enjoy their neighborhood, lawn, and mature trees.
