Modern Master Suite Addition

Our clients, Andy & Cassie, have a family with two boys. They were referred to us by friends in their Church and contacted us with a request to remodel their home to add a master suite bedroom and dining room on the ground floor. The three-bedroom house had only one full bathroom. The family needed more space and desired a real bedroom suite with a bath of their own and a walk-in closet. It took nearly two years from the first conversation before they were ready to start the design process. During this time, occasional discussions led to a refinement of their design goals. After evaluating design options, a main-level bedroom suite and dining area were ruled out. Instead, the clients decided to focus on their highest priority and build the bedroom suite of their dreams.

The Master Suite Addition Design Process

After presenting the various options, the choice was made to locate the master suite on the second floor. We carefully evaluated bedroom suite designs which were small, medium, and large. The design team looked at how these fit together on the exterior of the house, and how to integrate the new bedroom with the existing second floor hallway. In the end, a medium sized addition was chosen. It extends part way over the garage and fully across the family room that is in back of the house. We provided a new face to the home, with an updated sense of style and character from the original three window Colonial design that is seen in so many neighborhoods. This was accomplished through the use of stone, shake siding accent and new shutters.

A Master Bathroom Walk-in Shower With Seating

The clients requested a bathroom with a walk-in shower and a glass door. It is bright and inviting with a spacious feel thanks in part to the glass shower door. Dark cabinet woodwork contrasts with a white vanity top. The floor, in soothing cooling gray tones, compliments the cabinet well. One efficiency was to place the new bathroom back to back with the existing bathroom. This makes the plumbing work a bit easier, but also provides some acoustic privacy between what has now become the kid’s bathroom, and the new Master Bedroom, as the new bathroom acts as a buffer space. Bedroom Design With Expansive Dressing Room

A beautiful design feature is the new dressing room which occupies a spot prominent on the front of the home. This ended up being a desirable position balancing the amount of window space as well as the floor plan. A nice double window is appropriately-sized to the new dormer cut into the garage roof. It creates a beautiful and well lit dressing room, naturally divided between his and hers on the left and on the right.

The clients also asked to add character to their home. By using a dormer in the dressing room, the front of the home got its new pop of character, and through careful placement of the dressing room sliding barn door, the master bedroom received even more light without sacrificing any privacy.

By placing the bedroom at the back of the house, it provided a large triple window overlooking the backyard with sunset views. Two awning windows are above the nightstands on either side of the bed, punctuating the elevation of the house that looks to a side street, and providing comfortable Northern Light to the bedroom throughout the day. Everything about this bedroom suite addition was designed to create serenity and respite for the parents, a place that is their own calm retreat.
