We recently completed an outdoor living project for our clients, Benn and Laura, a professional couple with kids living in the Prairie Creek Neighborhood in Windsor, Wisconsin. They recently transitioned to working from their home full time, and as a result, they were looking to extend the usability of their outdoor space. Their home featured a covered back porch that was simply underutilized. It wasn't a three-season room or a screened-in porch but a simple covered porch area that was ideally situated to be much more!

When Coronavirus first hit, Benn and Laura decided that they needed to do something since they were now working from home and wanted some additional flexibility and space. They found us on Google and remembered our reputation as we were the remodeling company of choice for several of Laura's neighbors where she grew up.

A Creative Solution Using The Existing Porch

We first met with Benn and Laura to talk through their options. We narrowed down the ideas, and the choice became to use the existing structure of the porch, maximize the number of windows, and minimize expensive structural changes. This cost-cutting enabled the installation of a patio area and hot tub.

From Covered Porch To Comfortable Year-Round Outdoor Living Space

The project consisted of two main elements, creating a comfortable enclosed porch and adding a patio and amenities the whole family could enjoy. By reusing the existing infrastructure, we could save a significant amount that the homeowners reinvested elsewhere. Once framed the structure framed, we used PGT Eze Breeze windows to enclose the space, maximizing the natural light available. We installed a wood ceiling consisting of WP4 End Match Pine in a natural finish to warm up the space. For the floor, we again considered budget and installed durable Coretec Rigid Core Pro LVP in Edinburgh Oak.

Creating A Private Backyard Oasis For The Entire Family

One thing that bothered Benn and Laura about their backyard space was that even though it was a large yard, they felt that it lacked privacy from their neighbors. With the money saved by using the existing structural elements for the enclosed outdoor living space, we were able to build a patio large enough for furniture, a fire pit, and their new hot tub, all perfectly positioned and perfectly proportioned. To provide privacy, we installed pre-manufactured lattices from Wayfair as a privacy screen for the hot tub. We also created a delicate little trellis structure that supports a chair swing at the corner of the patio. Strategically positioned, these are literal and visual barriers and distractions to give them the privacy they sought.

Despite Supply Chain Issues, We Completed This Outdoor Living Project

This project was fully and correctly completed despite scheduling challenges because of the slow supply chains caused by the Coronavirus. The team at Degnan Design-Build-Remodel was able to address the concerns that arose. Doing things right and delivering excellence is the commitment that we live up to time after time.

The Team at Degnan Design-Build-Remodel

We are so incredibly happy with our new porch and patio. The space has truly made our house feel bigger and gives us a retreat to just relax and enjoy the weather well into the fall. The vinyl windows are simply amazing - you truly feel like you’re outside without having to deal with bugs or rain. The Degnan team’s design and construction resulted in a better relaxation refuge than I could have ever imagined and we use it all the time.
