Our clients Joe and Lila and their two boys live in a lovely relaxed Transitional Colonial in Prairie Home Estates in Middleton, Wisconsin. They bought their home in the perfect neighborhood, but it had a unique problem. It featured a small kitchen in an ample space. You could literally line dance in the wasted floor space. Even with all the room, there was not enough cabinetry or countertop space for everyday living. They needed a full kitchen remodel!

Assessing The Space

Upon first inspection, there were several challenges we needed to address. The "Subway" banquet table left the family climbing on each other to grab a seat, while the island was barely large enough for a baking pan. The old design gave them no good way to look into the backyard. To look out, you needed to climb onto the “Subway” table or peer out through the narrow door to the screened porch. On top of that, the refrigerator stuck out, creating a narrow tunnel when walking toward the formal dining room or mudroom. Finally, the kitchen was isolated and closed off from the family room, with only a doorway connecting the rooms. It was definitely time for a change!

The Solution: A Full Kitchen Remodel

After meeting with Joe and Lila and assessing their kitchen, we came up with the perfect solution. It started with removing the awkward banquette table. We gave this space new life and purpose by creating a little countertop and adding a beverage center, perfect for coffee and drinks. Next, we moved the door to the screen porch, freeing up space for a 9-foot window that visually connects the kitchen and porch. It brings in plenty of natural light and offers a clear view into the backyard!

Connecting The Kitchen To The Rest Of The House

After connecting the kitchen to the outside, the next step was to connect the space to the family room. We more than doubled the size of the opening by creating the perfect archway that ties into the other archways throughout the home. We centered the archway, balancing the space while leaving room to accommodate a new bank of pantry cabinets along the interior kitchen wall.

Adding Form and Functionality

Because we were doing extensive drywall repair to the doors and new window, it made sense to get the pantry right-sized and perfectly place the refrigerator. We carefully planned and executed our design. The pantry and refrigerator look beautifully uniform and straight across its face. The two cabinets on the right side are shallow pantries. The appliance center in the middle left is full depth. The refrigerator is recessed further back. The full-sized refrigerator now looks like a premium, built-in cabinet depth unit - but it’s larger and less expensive!

Joe loves to cook, and Lila wanted everyday functionality, so cooking amenities were a big deal. The appliances in this kitchen remodel include a 36-inch Wolf gas range with a griddle and a second Wolf Speed Oven in the island to increase functionality. The Speed Oven combines a microwave, convection oven, and broil technology. The long, rectangular island is the star of the show! The island provides the family with what they need – room for the family plus a friend or two. It also features plenty of cabinet storage and a spot for the speed oven.
