Our repeat clients, professionals with three elementary-school-aged children, own a 2-story Colonial home in the Westwynde neighborhood of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. After remodeling the kitchen several years ago, they now tasked us with a multi-room remodel including:

  • Remodeling the downstairs bathroom to add a shower for guests.

  • Converting the back hallway into a mudroom space that meets the family needs.

  • Updating the fireplace design, colors and side cabinets to handle today's advanced technology.

Updates To This Colonial Home

The home was a confused 2-story colonial that needed modern updates to meet the family's lifestyle needs. With no shower on the lower level, guests needed to traverse two sets of stairs to take a shower. The front hallway and closet also didn't meet the needs of the family. Coats and shoes were left out, and there was no place to sit down and put on shoes, or remove boots. The first-floor powder room door opened directly into the kitchen and dinette and needed to be moved to allow for privacy.

Updating the 1990s Fireplace

The fireplace area had been designed in the era of large tube TVs with a spot for the stand on the floor. The side built-ins were sized for CDs and DVDs rather than modern electronics. We updated the fireplace area to have beautiful aesthetics. We retiled the area with Icaria 12x24 field tile in Anticire with a 2x2 mosaic accent. To add an aesthetic touch, we chose a Vivid Grout in French gray and used a Schluter Jolly Brushed Graphited edge trim. We also installed a new linear mantle to tie in the newly designed side floating shelves. Rewired to work with the flat screen technology and today's AV electronics, the fireplace area brings a new element of modern design and a focus to the home.

A New Mud Room Remodel

The mudroom was originally just a narrow hallway and closet. Shoes cluttered the floor and jackets hung upon hooks behind the door. The area was closed off by ugly bifold doors which obstructed the area. We converted the space with new open storage including coat hooks, basket shelves for hats and mittens, and shoe storage below, creating a wall of well-organized storage, with plenty of room for the family to get ready comfortably.

The mudroom walls were painted with Sherwin Williams Twilight Gray, tying the color scheme into the kitchen which we updated in 2014. We replaced the flooring with Platinum Luxury Sheet in Landmark Greystone creating a unified and modern look to the space. The Kichler Semi-Flush Mount Ceiling Light in brushed nickel. Completes the modern look and provides a warm light to the entry. We also relocated the powder room door, moving it 90 degrees so that it opens into the privacy of the mudroom hallway, also providing better acoustic isolation.

Creating A Guest Bathroom

The finished basement in the home serves as a guest area when family and friends visit, but it only had a half bathroom. Guests needed to make their way from the basement through the foyer of the house, all the way to the second floor. Inconvenient to say the least, and not private for the family, or their guests. We broke through the concrete floor to install drainage plumbing as well as doing cosmetic updates to the space.

We installed a new white Kohler toilet, Countryside Cabinetry maple vanity in harvest finish including a Viatera Quartz vanity top in Solar Canyon. We updated the cosmetics by installing Mirabelle Vilamo fixtures and accents including sink and shower fixtures, towel bar, paper holder and towel ring to give the room a unified look and upscale feel.
